The Black Mountain Irrigation District (BMID) has an immediate opening for a Civil Engineer-In-Training.

This is a full time, permanent, unionized position, with the wage level commensurate with the candidate’s EIT Training.  Compensation is outlined in the BMID/CUPE Local 338 Collective Agreement, set at $35.56 per hour for an EIT in their first year of training, graduating up to $39.93 in their fourth year of training. A comprehensive benefit package is offered once the 6 month probationary period has been completed.

BMID will also consider resumes from candidates who have completed their 4 year training period.

Position Overview:

Under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, the Engineer-In-Training will assist and facilitate the design, planning and execution of Black Mountain Irrigation District projects.

Additionally, they will also facilitate, design and inspect works related to development servicing, dam safety, GIS/mapping, system records, and ensure District/regulatory standards are met.

The EIT is also responsible for adhering to the District’s procedures, policies and bylaws.

Incumbents will work both independently and as a member of a team.  Normal hours of work for this position are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday inclusive.

Civil Engineer-In-Training

Classification Summary

Under the direction of the Administrator (Professional Engineer), the Civil Engineer-In-Training (EIT) will assist and facilitate the design, planning and execution of Black Mountain Irrigation District projects. They will also facilitate, design and inspect works related to development servicing, dam safety, GIS/mapping, system records, and ensure District/regulatory standards are met.

Duties

  • Civil water infrastructure review and design
  • Review and provide comments on engineering reports
  • Writing reports
  • Communicates and coordinates with contractors, consultants, and other external agencies
  • Responds to enquiries from contractors, engineers, the public and staff
  • Follow/develop District bylaws, policies and design standards as required
  • Compile and/or analyze various systems reports and/or documents
  • Watershed management/planning activities
  • Planning system upgrades and future requirements
  • Estimating costs and obtaining quotes for required works
  • Purchasing as and when required
  • Project management
  • Mapping/GIS modifications and updates
  • On-site inspections

Credentials

  • 4-year Civil Engineering Degree
  • Supervisory skills and delegation
  • Time management
  • BC Driver’s License - Class 5
  • Ability to clearly communicate with other staff and public; i.e.  public relations
